Challenge” is the word she uses over and over again. Whether Stella McCartney is talking design, business, the environment, modernity, or morality (for her those last two are the same thing), she chooses to be upbeat about the blinkered thinking of her industry, seeing it as a call to arms and imagination. A lifelong vegetarian, McCartney is known for her refusal to use leather and fur, a commitment that actually ends up costing her company, due to arcane import taxes. But beliefs are beliefs, and McCartney, who has been a fashion designer since 1995, is unwilling to betray hers. “Being brought up on an organic farm and having a different way of looking at life comes into everything that I do,” she says. “From day one I didn’t want to be a hypocrite.” Addressing the production of textiles, for instance, which is hugely polluting, hers will be the first luxury brand to team with the Natural Resources Defense Council in its Clean by Design program. “What we hope to do is to isolate out a mill to just start the process, one that we will work with on a daily basis. The whole idea of improving one’s environmental footprint in this industry is you have to work with people.”

 These ethical imperatives do not hinder the brand one bit. During this summer’s Olympics, the athletes of Great Britain will compete in uniforms designed by McCartney. “The starting point, the inspiration, was the Union flag,” she explains. “I’m half American, but I’ve been born and bred here and want to make the country proud.” She’s also launching her second fragrance, a light-dark meeting of lily of the valley, moss, and truffle called L.I.L.Y, which was her father Paul McCartney’s nickname for her mother, Linda (“Linda, I love you”). “I feel like I’m lucky to make a fragrance. You have to achieve certain things in life to be able to make a perfume that is sold globally.” And yet, when asked if she’s now in her prime, this mother of four is not so sure. “When you’re challenging yourself the way that we do,” she says, “in trying to be a responsible brand, it always feels like the beginning.”

Ponders 'Lesbian Chic' As Fashion's Hot New Trend


Last we checked, being gay wasn't a "trend." But Style.com has decided to throw logic to the wind, naming "lesbian chic" one of its hot topics for fall.

 In a new article called "The Conversation," Style.com's Maya Singer reviews the "the questions on everyone's lips," including "Are you sick of prints yet?" and "Will anyone wear the Marc Jacobs fur hat?"

 Another pressing question of the fashion set: "Is lesbian chic here to stay?"

 Lesbians! They're everywhere. This summer, the New York fashion scene was buzzing with gossip about a couple of high-profile ladies who ditched their marriages and started dating women; across the pond, meanwhile, British Vogue ran a whole article on that phenomenon, while society rag Tatler chimed in with a feature on London's seven "loveliest lesbians." (Only seven?) Just last week, Models.com posted photos on its homepage of the nuptials of model Harmony Boucher and her bride, Nicole.

 Like leopard print, denim-on-denim and leather leggings, lesbians have come seemingly out of nowhere and quickly become a favorite trend among the fashionable set.

 Except, well, lesbians weren't just "invented." The women featured in Tatler were probably gay last year, and the year before that.

 In any case, Singer declares that this lesbian fashion boom will impact the industry in myriad ways. "Socially, perhaps it means that in an industry stuffed with attractive young women, a few more of them may start dating each other," she writes. By that logic, we wonder if the same tendency is found in the field of nursing, where about 90 percent of registered nurses are female, or public schools, where approximately 75 percent of teachers are women.

 Outside the industry, Singer writes that the growing lesbian fad will impact fashion itself, as in: in with the combat boots, out with the heels! Rihanna's recent penchant for flats is cited as evidence of the changing tides. The logic seems to be that if you wear combat boots, you're probably a lesbian.

Fashion maestro’s tower plan makes waves in Venice lagoon


Venice – French fashion designer Pierre Cardin’s billion-euro (dollar) plan to build a giant tower on an industrial site in the Venice lagoon is causing a stir in a city with a proud architectural heritage.

 While Venice mayor Giorgio Orsoni has given the project the go-ahead, some residents are up in arms and say the initiative is part of a set of policies that are increasingly turning Venice into a playground for wealthy foreigners.

 And conservationists are cautioning that the contemporary design tower – a complex that would include luxury apartments, hotels, restaurants, education centres and sports facilities – could mar the Venice skyline forever.

 “You cannot just turn up and decide to do something that makes no sense at all,” said Alvise Benedetti, deputy head of the Venice section of Italia Nostra, a national association set up to defend the country’s many monuments.

 “Venice should be respected – it is a city with more than a thousand years of history,” said Benedetti, a history professor, pointing out to an iconic view of the Rialto bridge on the Grand Canal that is renowned the world over.

 A few steps away in a vast office decorated with frescoes, Orsoni is keen to stress that the tower will not be in the historic part of Venice but in an abandoned port area that is already an eyesore for anyone looking that way.

 “We can see so much ugliness from Venice, like industrial chimneys. I think seeing the Palais Lumiere would be far nicer,” the mayor told AFP.

 “Apart from that, Venice has always innovated over the centuries. It has always been able to make leaps ahead and innovate in architecture,” he said.

 Cardin, who was born in the Venice region before emigrating to France, is no stranger to innovation seen in his visionary designs in the 1960s.

 But the 90-year-old fashion maestro realises that winning over the people of Venice will be no mean feat and he visited the city himself on Monday to outline the 255-metre (837-foot) project and open an exhibition about it.

 “I want to offer Venice a big garden for eternity,” Cardin said.

 He said he wanted the project completed in time for the Milan Expo in 2015, building on a 40-hectare lot currently occupied by some abandoned warehouses that would first have to be cleaned of industrial chemicals before building.

 The complex is made up of six giant discs held up by three towers of different heights and is referred to by its designers as a “vertical city”.

 The budget is estimated at between 1.5 billion and 2.0 billion euros (S$2.4 billion to $3.1 billion) with part of the funds coming from Cardin himself and part coming from the pre-construction sale of luxury condos.

 “This project will give work to a minimum of 5,000 workers,” said Cardin, who has put his nephew, Rodrigo Basilicati, in charge of the project.

 Asked by AFP why he had chosen Venice, Cardin said it was because of his Italian roots and added: “There is no space in Paris.”

 Cardin also defended himself against criticism from local conservationists saying that the tower “will not be visible from Venice”.

Delegates Show State Pride in Fashion Choices

The tradition of wacky individualistic outfits at party conventions is a long one, so consider the effort it must take to enforce
a delegation dress code.
Nonetheless, a number of state delegations are making their collective fashion statements. New Mexico’s delegates are in
turquoise polo shirts with the state’s Zia sun logo. Many Michigan delegates have slipped on football jerseys emblazoned with “
Ford” and “48,” a tribute to former President Gerald R. Ford, who played center and linebacker for the University of Michigan
before representing the state in Congress.
Oklahomans wore tasteful blue blazers for men and women, with a patch bearing the state seal. Mike Sanders, a delegate, said they
had been voted best-dressed delegation by NPR twice, in 2012 and 2008.
Greg Treat, a delegate from Oklahoma City, said there was a debate this year about switching the color of the blazers to advance
the state’s claim to be the most Republican in the nation. “Several states claim to be the reddest state in the union,” he
said, “but because we had all 77 counties go red, we talked of having red blazers.” Tasteful navy prevailed.
West Virginians are making a political statement in black coal miner’s hats. “We have a war on coal in this country,” said
Brian Long, a delegate, blaming President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency for regulations making it harder to mine
coal and run coal-fired power plants. “We’re proud of our coal mines and coal miners,” he said.
No surprise, the delegation making the loudest statement with its outfits is Texas. Almost all 155 members are in white straw
cowboy hats and loose shirts patterned like the state flag, with a large lone star stamped over the right breast.
“Texans are proud, and we always wear our colors with pride,” said Janis Holt, a delegate from Silsbee, Tex.
And because the unofficial Texas motto might be “too much ain’t enough,” the delegation will retire Tuesday’s uniform and
pull out a second uniform for Wednesday night’s activities.

Fashion Week Is Approaching: Here Are The Rules

From 6 September, Fashion Week brings an explosion of sewing and the height at the Lincoln Center and at other locations, and it

"I just Ana Lycenzwcs the Divine." "Have you seen Rodrigo? He owes me a mission." "Pavla LeChampagne invited me to the most
beautiful after-party!"
Everyone will be so dazzled they assume that they famous people - at all and in fact, people.

* Make a point of occasionally, slide your finger to the keyboard with a worried look intention.
This gives them the idea that they blog or tweet desperately live performances.

Fashion-Focused Kaleidoscope App Readies Personalized Shopping & Recommendations

Kaleidoscope, the mobile and desktop app which is the e-commerce equivalent to Pinterest’s fashion-focused boards, helps users
– primarily women – not just find outfits they like, but actually purchase them. The company recently rolled out an updated
version of its app which represents the first step towards an important, forthcoming feature: Kaleidoscope is moving into
personalized recommendations for fashion.
What this means is that, going forward, Kaleidoscope won’t be just about randomly browsing through tops and skirts and handbags
and shoes – it will begin to learn what it is you like.
This level of personalization is not live yet in the new version, to be clear – but it’s on the horizon. Initially, the company
had to deepen its Facebook integration to start the process of developing the appropriate algorithms for personalization. In the
earlier version, Kaleidoscope only had simple social media integration built in – users could browse and search through items
then share to Facebook, Pinterest or Twitter. But in the new version, Kaleidoscope is pulling in users’ Facebook profile data to
learn what they like in order to show them items similar to those they’ve expressed interest in.
Related to this improved Facebook integration is support for Facebook’s Open Graph, which will allow the app to automatically
share things like “favoriting” items or looks, for example, back to Facebook.
Better support for Facebook isn’t just about addressing the need for more customized and personalized experiences, though.
According to Kaleidoscope’s Director of Business Development, Sarah Kunst, Facebook users are also the most highly engaged. ”
Pinterest is a great firehose of traffic, but the users don’t necessarily become weekly active or daily active users,” she says
of the service’s second-largest source of referral traffic (the top being direct). “A Facebook users spends 50% more time on
the site, and returns at a higher rate as well,” she adds.
Also new in version 2 of the app is support for unique profile URLs, which lets users share their favorites with others outside
of the social web – a top-requested feature.
For those unfamiliar with this company, Kaleidoscope is a mobile-first startup which launched on Android during this year’s
Fashion Week in NY, later expanding to iPhone, web and Facebook. The latter two were added in order to better serve its
demographic which Kunst admits is largely women shoppers. (It’s worth noting, however, that the company did experiment with men
’s fashion during this year’s Coachella music festival.) Essentially a visual search engine for fashion, the app pulls in items
sourced from fashion bloggers, photographers, and the databases of many major Internet retailers (e.g. Macy’s, Nordstrom, Net-a
-porter, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bergorf Goodman, Shopbop, etc.) and even some smaller ones. While those retailers are not partners,
the company has teamed up with companies like Condé Nast and AOL (disclosure, TechCrunch corporate parent) for special events
like Fashion Week, in addition to doing its own original photography in some cases.
Inporia, which operates the Kaleidoscope app, was founded by Max Skibinsky, a social gaming vet, who sold his company Hive7 to
Playdom in 2010, and Ryan Junee, an advisor to 500 Startups, StartMate, co-founder of Omnisio (later acquired by Google), and
former Product Manager at YouTube. Currently a small team of four, the company raised $1.25 million in seed funding last year
from NEA, SV Angel, 500 Startups, Clearstone Venture Partners,  Southern Cross Venture Partners, Ignition Partners, Y Combinator,
Start Fund, and others.
With the rollout of the updated iOS app last week, which hit the “New & Noteworthy” list in North America, like its localized
counterpart did in parts of Latin America, Kunst says 60% of users have shopped products in the app overall, and 80% of desktop
users have done the same. Pinterest sharing is also up by over 80% since last Thursday’s v2 debut. The company isn’t providing
raw download numbers or details of conversions (as tracked via its affiliate programs) at this time.

This week on #Twitterati, designers, fashionistas, and journalists react to #NYFW trending on Twitter, the hefty size of Vogue's September issue might be considered a safety hazard, and John Galliano is stripped of his Legion of Honor Award for past racist remarks. For more #Twitterati goodness, read up on the most happening fashion moments, events, and quotes according to Twitter's fashionable elite.
Nina Garcia incredulously tweeted, "#NYFW trending... already?????" Well Nina, per The Fashion Spot's tweet, "#NYFW is trending already...because apparently we all can't wait for the madness to begin." Right on? Actually, while journalists and fellow fashionistas can hardly stand the anticipation, designers seem to feel a bit different. Contemporary designer Cynthia Rowley reacted by tweeting, "Can #NYFW please not be trending yet... can you give a girl a minute to get herself together..." DKNY followed up with, "Yikes. #NYFW is ALREADY A TRENDING TOPIC. #TooSoon." However, it's safe to say that in the world of fashion, words like "anxiety," "too soon," "hell-week," "adrenaline," "excited," and "yikes" all mean about the same thing. Gotta love those fashion tweeps.

Vogue's September issues are causing health problems
"Vogue has a weight problem," tweeted Huffington Post. Never thought you'd hear these words, right? Since this year's September issue weighs more than your standard gym weights, it might be difficult to flip through those glossy pages. If, by chance, you do happen to finish reading the 916 pages (of which 658 are ads) of the year's biggest issue, here is some great gym advice courtesy of Stylelist, "Skipped the gym this weekend? Just go pick up Vogue instead." The site goes on to tweet, "Vogue weighs 4.5 POUNDS this month."  In fact, the magazine's weight issue has become quite the health hazard. Styleite tweeted, "Vogue September issues are so big they're causing delivery difficulties!" One postal worker commented on the problem by pointing to an injured elbow: "Thirteen years. You see all the swelling here, because of that kind of magazine. You get a building like this, I have to go upstairs, I have to open the door. I cannot use both hands.” (via Huffington Post Style) . Who knew Anna Wintour could be so dangerous? Actually, pretty sure we all did.
Galliano gets stripped of his honor
While rumors have been swirling for quite some time, Harper's Bazzar UK has confirmed that "French President Hollande has stripped John Galliano of the Legion of Honor accolade following his racist conviction it is revealed." The Cut followed by tweeting and emphasizing that "Galliano has been stripped of his Legion of Honor title, a rare occurrence in the history of the French award." Galliano was the recipient of the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 2010. However, this stripping is just another blow Galliano's career and reputation have received since making anti-Semitic remarks at a Parisian cafe in 2011.
Fashionista reacted tweeting, "So Galliano getting stripped of his Legion of Honor award is pretty rare—Manuel Noriega still has his..." Thoughts? Has France's President gone too far or does Galliano's racist remarks deserve such apprehension? Why Fashion Bloggers Need Each Other

"Whether it's Google or Apple or free software, we have fantastic competitors and it keeps us going." - Bill Gates
Bloggers are no different from a small business or a start-up, this is a career that requires a leap of faith and belief in his
own ideas. But what sets blogs apart is that, although other small publications all hope to gain notoriety, can be (and often is)
is only one hundred percent - and jump alone is fear.
Moreover, in an industry that now feels saturated and marginalized (where everyone and their mother is a blogger, but a few are
taken seriously), you can still feel isolated. Blogging is largely a singular practice, is behind a computer screen at home - even
if you can talk to thousands of readers, the act of creating and maintaining a blog can sometimes feel bad comfortable and
kidnapped.
So while you should analyze the blogosphere for better competition yourself, you must also use each other as friends, confidants
and advisers, as photographers, as business partners, social media known as technical support, digital designers, and most
importantly, as a team. Other bloggers are experiencing the same feelings that you can feel, after all.
In addition to the blogs to continue as an industry (and not just as an individual star class), the community needs to come
together, if you live in Maine, Nebraska, North Carolina, or New York, to maintain standards of practice and ethics, like other
sectors, such as journalism do.
An industry that could be an interesting comparison for blogs is the beginning of the film industry in the 1920s. Originally
formed by a group of variables cloth operators, actors, directors, independent groups, etc. gathered in the nascent industry to
work together, eventually syndicated and discovered that the film industry is gainful employment creation is one. Although I do
not mean that bloggers should organize (now or in the future), I think the method of membership as a collective force as a
sorority or fraternity is an interesting way to see the industry fashion blogs.
Another reason that bloggers need the other to do, as the quote from Bill Gates noted, the idea that the best competition pushes
to improve. Like other push the limits, you must constantly strive to develop and improve these limits, and create their own
identity in the field. Progress is progress, even if someone else in your industry. We should applaud the outputs of support and
use them as examples, yes, it can be a career.
And finally, bloggers seek a sense of openness, as a democratic approach to be fashionable and be "real" and that constructive
criticism should play a role in all this. Sending an email does not take long, but the opening of negotiations on topics of
analysis in the field of fashion blogs is required for mounting and forward.
Remember that confidence is overrated. This is not serious do not know what will happen in fashion blogs. But sometimes, you have
a community can do just that much better.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN LOOKS HER AGE ON FASHION CANADA COVER

Stunning! That’s the only word we can use to describe Carly Rae Jepsen on the cover of Fashion Canada. While CRJ is adorbs, she
dresses much younger than her 26 years, with her platform sneakers and high-waisted dresses. We love her, but her wardrobe is too
young. On the cover of the October issue of the mag, CRJ mixes prints – green snakeskin with leopard print heels- which is a
highly sophisticated fashion move. The result is just gorgeous.
More of this please, Carly! Her stylist and/or the mag’s fashion director done good.
Jepsen, who is super fair with creamy, porcelain skin, could use a teeny bit of bronzy shimmer or glow on those shapely gams. But
overall, she looks positively beautiful with her brown waves. Paired with her signature, heavy bangs and peachy makeup, her hair
calls attention to her baby blues. The mix of wavy and straight textures plays up her peepers. Doesn’t she look like the lovely
Jessica Biel?
Seriously, this is the best that the ‘Call Me Maybe’ singer has ever looked since her ascent to fame on the back of summer 2012
′s biggest hit. If she keeps going this route and dressing like this, she will certainly become a fashion plate and her look will
be envied, copied and written about in all the women’s rags.

The singer tweeted the photo, along with her excitement at being on the cover of a mag in her native country. She posted:

The Business of Blogging | The Man Repeller


Next up in our on-going series on fashion’s most influential bloggers and their business models, BoF speaks to Leandra Medine a.k.a. The Man Repeller.

NEW YORK, United States — In April of 2010, Leandra Medine, then a 21-year-old journalism student living with her parents on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, launched a blog with a novel and quirky concept: The Man Repeller.

“It’s about trends that women love and men hate,” the gregarious Medine tells BoF. “I was with a close friend of mine, Rachel [Strugatz],” she says, recalling the lightbulb moment that still makes her laugh. “Man repelling was something that we had already uncovered and been talking about. We’d go to Topshop and I’d try something on and she’d be like, ’That’s really man repelling,’ and I’d be like, ‘I know, it’s great.’ That day, I thought, ‘This is a brilliant blog idea.’”

But this was two to three years after figures like Scott Schuman (“The Sartorialist”), Susie Bubble, Bryanboy and Tommy Ton seemed to have already laid claim to the upper echelons of the fashion blogosphere. How was Medine able to breakthrough and establish her own successful business?

First of all, she is very funny. And perhaps what differentiates The Man Repeller most is the way Medine marries impeccable high fashion aesthetics with a comedic approach that can literally make you laugh out loud. “I think what’s so interesting for people is that I don’t take it so seriously and yet I am still immersed in the [fashion] industry,” she says.

But behind her natural goofiness is the more serious side of a very smart and savvy young woman. While many of the influential fashion bloggers who came before her started their sites as purely personal side projects, Medine was more strategic in her approach, identifying a compelling concept before bringing it to life. Indeed, the success of other fashion bloggers provided something of a ‘proof of concept’ for Medine and underlined the importance of having a distinctive point of view.

But a great concept was only the first step. “Man Repeller as a concept was the door,” says Medine. “But it’s what I’ve done with the site that has enabled me to walk through that door. Execution is almost everything.”

Featuring self-portraits of Medine wearing the kind of edgy and eccentric pieces that risk repelling the average man, as well as plenty of images of similarly challenging and “unsexy” items, including “sweet lime green drop crotch utility pants” and “jewelry that resembles violent weaponry,” The Man Repeller was mentioned on popular fashion site Refinery29, where Medine had friends, just three days after launch, helping to drive immediate awareness and traffic.

Today, just over two years since launch, the site clocks over 2.6 million pageviews a month, according to statistics provided by Medine, and the concept of “man repelling” has entered the fashion vernacular, as has “arm party,” a term coined by Medine to describe her habit of stacking her forearms with numerous bracelets.

Medine has also managed to turn her blogging into a significant business. Recapping her various revenue streams, she says: “I have a storefront but that generates no more than 10 percent. Ads must be 30 percent. Collaborations bring in 60 percent.”

Indeed, it’s her unabashed pursuit of brand partnerships that constitute by far the most important part of Medine’s business strategy. “I am probably more monetisable than the actual site,” explains Medine, who brims with natural enthusiasm and has been paid to write, style and model for a number of brands and retailers. In the last few months alone, Medine has styled store windows for Maje, worked with Michael Kors on a video to help launch the brand’s new Madison Avenue lifestyle store, curated personalised “arm parties” for jewelry etailer BaubleBar, hosted a shopping soirée for Stuart Weitzman and modeled live in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue.

“We have an ongoing collaboration with Leandra called Mr Dannijo. Each season we create a playful statement collection,” says Danielle Snyder, co-founder of eclectic New York-based jewelry line Dannijo. As part of the partnership, for which Medine is paid a commission on each piece sold, she blogs about the collection and stars in a seasonal launch video. According to Snyder, the results have been impressive. “The collaboration has boosted sales and increased our web traffic.”

Medine has also tried her hand at designing. Last year, she worked with Aimee Cho of outerwear label Gryphon to create a navy trench coat with black leather sleeves and a gold leaf camouflage print for which she was paid a commission on each sale. It sold out on Shopbop within a few hours, boosted by a post on The Man Repeller that featured Medine wearing the coat and urged readers to buy. In the comments below the post, her loyal community of ‘man repellers’ responded enthusiastically, almost without exception.

Medine has also scored a book deal. Set to be published in September 2013 by Grand Central Publishing, the book is a collection of semi-autobiographical essays that each link a specific outfit to a key life moment. “It’s based on the notion that the female memory is so driven by fashion,” she explains. “I can tell you exactly what I was wearing when I met my husband, when he first broke up with me, when we got back together.”

And as a sign of the power of her brand, six months ago, Medine signed with top entertainment-industry talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to help her capitalise on the opportunities that blogging has brought. “I think they are great at representing individuals and they know how to execute. We have the ideas, we just need an execution plan and that’s where they come in really well,” she says.

“It’s also important to have someone as big as CAA standing behind you saying this is what you deserve,” she continues. “I think more than anything what’s great is that they have taught me to think on a larger scale. This is our moment, so we may as well seize it.”

But how long will the moment last?

“We are at a point in the evolution of blogging where only the strongest will survive — it’s Darwinism,” says Medine. “I think the biggest fight is to stay relevant and innovative. Things get stale very quickly, especially on the Internet.”

Medine has certainly built a successful online brand and has experience designing and marketing products, assets that could take her far. Indeed, Nastygal founder Sophia Amoruso, who first launched her store on eBay and used social media to build her “unapologetically sexy” brand, now heads a full-fledged fashion e-tailer that made $28 million in revenue in 2011 and recently raised $9 million in funding from top tier venture capital firm Index Ventures. Like Amoruso, Ms. Medine commands a huge following on social platforms like Instagram, where she has more than 142,000 followers.

But for now, Medine is focused on developing her editorial voice. “My big push is turning Man Repeller into a major destination,” says Medine. “In my head what I imagine is a cross between Vogue and Jezebel, because Jezebel has the wit and the quirk and the fun that you want and Vogue has the image-driven, glossy, exclusive, chic aura,” she explains. “I want to start producing big stories that are interesting, funny, compelling narratives from smart women,” she continues. “What I’m hoping to do is start hiring writers who can share that point of view. I’m going to do it slow and steady.”

Indeed, while a number of top fashion bloggers now have deals with major media companies like Condé Nast, Medine sees value in staying independent. “The idea of partnering with print kings scares me. And I want to make sure everything stays digital,” she explains.

Samsung ventures into fashion in South Korea


Maybe a galaxy of smartphones and other consumer products are not sufficient to Samsung. The company has recently ventured into the fashion retail.

One of the subsidiaries of Samsung Cheil Industries has introduced the second South Korean 8ight, a "fast fashion" retailers with men and women clothing, footwear and accessories. "Quick Mode" is a term used to describe the trendy fashion for the masses at affordable prices. Similar brands include H & M and Zara.
